This series surrounds my Grandma Ted who lives in Hingham, Massachusetts. She was my mom’s high school Spanish teacher and became my mom’s guardian when my mom was 15 years old and her previous living situation was not working out. Grandma Ted used to babysit me once a week from the time I was born. As a result, I was closer to her compared to other extended family members whom I did not see much at all. I grew distant from Grandma Ted after my parents and I moved to California after first grade. Now that I am older and delving deeper into my ethnic heritages, I find myself more aware of the cultural and societal differences between her and my mom/myself. I’ve started an ongoing project to document her life as she ages and lives alone following her husband’s passing ten years ago, hoping to be present with who she is while making sense of the overall disparities in who we are.
